Sunday after opening day. The ducks were still flying fairly well. It's good to be back out. Franki, Riley and I went out to the spot in Burbank that Eric and I had frequently went to last winter. This was the first duck hunt for Franki not being the exclusive shooter and outside of the youth season. Riley had gone a few times last winter with Eric and I. While Riley is not an active hunter, she enjoys being out with me and simply taking in the outdoors. She gets as excited as everyone else when shots are fired and feathers are falling. She is a joy to have in the duck blind. We got to the duck blind about 4 AM to make sure we got a choice spot. After setting up the decoys, Riley and I sat down in the blind. Franki laid down in front of the blind and took a nap. As shooting hours approached, I stirred everyone and readied them for the onslaught of birds that I was convinced was coming. 20 minutes after sunrise, Franki and I downed our first pair; a woodie drake for me and a woodie hen for her. What a memory that was just made! One of my favorite things to do is to watch my kids succeed. The experience and excitement doubles when they are successful in an endeavor such as hunting. Another hour or so went by with both of us shooting and missing a variety of birds. We connected again on a flock of buffleheads that dropped right into the decoys. Franki and I both scored a hen. I also clipped a drake, but was unable to finish him off since he swam back out into the main channel of the Columbia River. What a great day!
